Blue, Black and Splash Australorps
Origin of Breed
The Australorp was developed in Australia as a utility breed with a focus on egg laying. Did you know in the 1920s they broke a number of records for the number of eggs laid. As a result is has been a popular breed ever since. Their name is a combination of Australian and Orpington, as they were developed from English Black Orpingtons
Characteristics of the Breed
Australorps make great family birds as they are calm and friendly and happy to be handled. They do well free-range but will tolerate confinement, as long as they are not overcrowded. They are also known to be good nest sitters and mothers, making them one of the most exceptional large, heritage utility breeds of chicken.
Australorps lay approximately 250 light-brown eggs per year. The world record for most eggs laid by an Australorp hen is 364 eggs in 365 days.
As your probably gathering by now, I really love the dual purpose breeds. Beautiful stocky bodies, fantastic egg layers and beautiful plummage. Australorps are well known as being a great egg layer giving the old faithful ISA a run for her money. Anyone wanting plenty of good sized eggs, then these are the birds to go for. We have all three colours; blue, black and splash to give you a fabulous colour variation within your flock.
