Origin of the Breed
The Welsummer originated in Holland.
Characteristics of the Breed
Welsummers are friendly and easily handled birds that love to free range and forage for food but can also be kept in runs quite happily.
Overseas hens will lay large, medium to deep brown eggs that are often speckled. Unfortunately here in Australia, again due to the limited gene pool, Australian Wellie eggs tend to be more of a light caramel. I occasionally get lightly speckled egg but not very often. Did you know the overseas Welsummers lay less eggs per year then their Australian counterparts. It is believed the darker the egg produced by a hen, the longer it takes to produce. Australian Welsummers will easily give you 5 eggs per week.
